Sixteen years old and fighting for every breath: How donors gave Sophie a second chance at life
Every day, patients across our community face sudden, life-threatening emergencies. For some, every second truly counts. Gold Coast Hospital Foundation is dedicated to supporting children, adults, and families during their most critical moments — funding life-saving medical equipment, vital support services, research programs and transforming hospital spaces to provide care when it’s needed most.
For Sophie, what began as a regular flu quickly became a fight for survival. Rushed to hospital with her lungs failing, she was saved by the Gold Coast University Hospital ECMO team and a donor-funded mobile ECMO vehicle that brought life-saving care directly to her. After months in intensive care and more than 100 days in hospital, Sophie finally walked out into the sunshine, breathing on her own and heading home to her family — a moment made possible thanks to donor generosity.
This Christmas, your support can help give more families the same chance Sophie had. Every second counts, and your donation to Gold Coast Hospital Foundation can help save a life.
