Gastric Ultrasound Workshop

The Gastric Ultrasound Workshop will be held on June 1st and 2nd at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH). Hosted by the Anesthetic department of GCUH, the workshop is tailored to the anaesthetist in the preoperative assessment of gastric contents and volume.

Dr Nav Sidhu who is a specialist Anaesthetist with extensive clinical and research experience in gastric ultrasound from Auckland’s North Shore Hospital will convene the workshop with 4 hours contributed towards Continuing Personal Development (CPD).

The workshop will provide real training with hands on gastric ultrasound practice on volunteer medical students.

Sessions 

Saturday June 1st:  one session at 1.00pm to 5.00pm

Sunday June 2nd: one session at 8.00am to 12.00pm

Sunday June 2nd: one session at 1.00pm to 5pm

Inclusons

All pre-reading materials, half day hands on session with volunteers to scan PLUS ongoing mentoring after the course until you are both competent and confident. (Mentoring in person for GCHHS staff, online for other health services staff).

Workshop Convenor

Dr Nav Sidhu qualified from the University of Auckland, completed his intern year at Whanganui Base Hospital (NZ) before moving to country Victoria for PGY2. He returned to NZ to commence specialist training in anaesthesia at New Plymouth and Palmerston North, eventually returning to Auckland for advanced training.

During anaesthesia training, he completed papers towards a Master in Clinical Education qualification and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators. He currently works at North Shore Hospital, Auckland as a Consultant Anaesthetist, where he has held a number of departmental portfolios including Supervisor of Training, Fellowship Supervisor, and Executive Leadership member. He has held various roles with ANZCA, most recently as Chair of the ANZCA Educators Sub-Committee. He was awarded the University of Auckland’s 2019 Distinguished Clinical Teacher Award and is their current Director of Medical Admissions.

He learned gastric ultrasound while on sabbatical in the USA in 2017, and subsequently developed and convened the first dedicated gastric ultrasound workshop in Australasia in 2018. He has over 20 peer-reviewed publications, including 4 on gastric ultrasound. Most recently, he delivered gastric ultrasound teaching at the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in Singapore.
